What do the Amish know that we don’t?
As Americans, we actually have people go on sightseeing tours to see the Amish families at work, at home, and buy their handmade furniture and Quilts. Granted, its not possible for everyone in a social group to be happy, but the Amish seem to really be quite happy and take pride in their work, their families, and being faithful to their religion. What about their lives could we integrate into our world to bring about a more peaceful life?
The Americans are fascinated with Amish (and even my own Mennonite church) culture; we are so different from you that you can’t help but want to know more.
We believe in working the soil because it allows us to be closer to God. Both of our religions are based solely on the idea of Christianity. We don’t need Palm Pilots or televisions or any of that other stuff to make us happy and we are certainly better off without it because with it, there is temptation to do wrong. The Amish cut temptation off at the knees by living without electricity; we Mennonites use electricity and computers, though there are sects of us that live exactly like the Old Order Amish do, no lectric, no cars, no anything really considered “modern”. Let me tell you what you are missing out on by being Englisch,
By having all those….things….you make life so fast. Planes and cars and phones that are computers; it’s all a money race to see who can have the most advanced thing and to show it off. It is all pride, which we consider sin. We think we are better off without it; the reason we are happy is because we feel this is the right way to live. There is nothing like coming from a hard day in the field helping your father bring in the hay and your hands are sore and you have blisters from the twine used to bale and you turn your face up to the sun and you feel its warmth. When I am inside cooking or Sewing or cleaning or reading, I look around, and I realize that I have Paradise on Earth. I have time to spend with my family, my friends, and my God. There’s no comparison to some of the traditions we uphold; when was the last time you heard of a hymnsing? How about a work folic? Quilting frolic?
These wonderful things have all been erased from the Englisch cultuer and replaced by each new piece of technology and each new skyscraper they build to accomodate everything.
Sometimes I feel bad for those of you living in such a fast set life…there’s no chance for you to unwind….relax. That’s why people are so fascinated by us; we’ve got time to relax and unwind.
